The opening of the II International Research School 2009-06-23

The ceremony of raising the flag marked the opening of the 2nd International Research School. On Tuesday morning the participants of the IRS’09 got familiar with the subject of the future studies.

“Acoustics” (tutors: Evgeny Ballad (Russia), Igor Demin (Russia), Sara Magnuson (Sweden)). This project’s main goal is to study the specifics of recording of natural sounds and processing of the recorded materials.

“Astronomy” (tutors: Denis Denisenko (Russia), Salome Matos (Portugal)). This project is conducted for the second time. Denis and Salome already worked together once in 2008 at the IRS’08. The children from different countries who took part in the project then were studying double stars under their leadership. This year’s project is called “The living sky” and goal is to teach the schoolchildren to process astronomic images.

“Chemistry” (tutor: Aleksey Kosarev (Russia)). The title of the project is “Synthesis of fluorescent labels for biologically important molecules such as proteins, and nucleic acids”. For 5 days young chemists will be developing such labels.

“History” (tutors: Roman Shlyahtin (Russia), Artem Kosmarsky (Russia)). The children will try to understand different culture, such as Greek, Medieval European, Muslim. Finally, as a conclusion of this work one’s own history of being in the world will be created.

“Hydrobiology” (tutors: Galina Frolova (Russia), Mikhail Litvinov (Russia)). Analysis of the quality of water and soil is getting more and more important in the age of intensive development of industry and increasing level of pollution. The teenagers who have decided to take part in this project will collect samples of water and soil and analyze them.

“Molecular Biology” (tutors: Dmitry Chistyakov (Russia), Sergei Legotsky (Russia), Deniza Kaluzova (Czech Republic)). “Introduction to the modern techniques of biological objects analysis” – that’s the name of the project this year. Nowadays this natural-scientific approach is more interesting because it includes basics of Chemistry, Biology and Informatics.

“Ornithology” (tutors: Olga Kochetova (Russia), Aurora Malapert (France)). First of all the tutors have warned the participants of their project that they will have to get up very early, because the observation of birds will begin at dawn. For 10 days they will be defining species composition around, population density and the peculiarities of the wildlife of the area.

“Psycholinguistics” (tutors: Ekaterina Spiridonova (Russia), Vanessa Opsommer (Belgium)). The participants of this project will be studying Gender linguistics by writing their own stories. Thus they will be trying to find out the difference in the perception of events by boys and girls from different counties and cultures.

“Psychology” (tutors: Anastasia Korjenkova (Russia), Anastasia Smirnova (Russia), Roman Shimansky (German)). The project which started last year is continued now. “Gender difference of teenagers’ image of the world and their self-image in the world and culture context” – this subject will be studied by young psychologists. The project is expected to be very interesting because the participants are representatives of different religions.

“Robotics and Mechatronics” (tutors: Fernando Solis Gonzales (Mexico), Hector Emmanuel Munoz Zapata (Mexico), Jesus Ivan Salomon Garcia (Mexico), Lillian Elizabeth Arvizu Rodriguez (Mexico), Pavel An (Russia)). It is one of the most difficult and important project both technically and psychologically. The schoolchildren from Russia and Iran will be working at the foot activated upper limb prosthesis under the leadership of their Mexican tutors.

The participants of the International Research School have already chosen their projects and their work has begun.
