Acoustic laboratory

Trainers:
Evgeny Ballad (Russia)
Dr. of Physics, musician, head of laboratory "Ton-studio" (sound recording studio for youth), teacher of Moscow Lyceum №–1553

In 2000 Evgeny graduated from Physical faculty of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Department of Acoustics and started there his PhD studying. In 2004 he have defended dissertation on Physical faculty of Lomonosov MSU. The domain of Eugenies scientific interests is nonlinear acoustics of solids and musical acoustics.

From 2000 Evgeny is the head of «Ton-studio» (sound recording studio in DNTTM). Ton-studio is the laboratory where different musical and research projects of youth are produced. From 2002 Evgeny is the leader of two musical groups "Lyamtsa"(Russian folk-music, www.luamtsa.ru ) and "Podarki" (rock-music, www.podarki.zadvinul.ru, http://www.myspace.com/podarki ).
In 2004 the "Tonstudio" laboratory organized a project called "My First Disc" (www.disc.redu.ru). I was a project for young musicians, aimed to help them interact with colleagues and record theirs own songs and musical compositions.
In 2007 "Tonstudioâ"started a new project for youth. "Acoustic Lab of DNTTM" is an educational program, launched to organize, lead and develop a whole range of research and project works of young people that deals with acoustics, especially musical acoustics.

Title of the project: Acoustic Laboratory of DNTTM

Annotation:
Dear colleagues! We're glad to introduce you our educational project "Acoustic Laboratory of DNTTM" with an application to the International Research School-2009!
Acoustic Lab of DNTTM is an educational program, launched to organize, lead and develop a whole range of research and project works of young people that deal with acoustics, especially musical acoustics. Musical acoustics as a discipline - investigates musical instruments sounding; acoustics of concert halls, being in a close connection with computers methods; develops new tools of temporary music design etc.
Application of this project for the International Research School-2009 includes a theoretical and a practical part.
The theoretical part consists of series of lections organized as an introduction in acoustics and computers tools of music. Lection material relates to a sound as to a physical phenomenon, describes basic terms of acoustics, and introduces computers tools of sounds recording and researching.
The main part is practical. It's aimed to producing of research and projects works of young people. During this section pupils learn to work with special tools of temporary acousticians and musicians (microphones, acoustic hardware, oscilloscopes, etc.), learn how to use computers methods of recording and analyzing of sounds. This part includes sets of experiments analyzing and discussing experimental data and – as a result - producing final presentations (PowerPoint files) of projects.
This year our lab glad to suggest you two different directions of working.

  1. First direction is for persons who would like to study physics and acoustics profoundly and get some skills in an experimental physics. If yoг would like to work in this direction you should contact us by e-mail to discuss some questions about theme of investigation. Any ideas are welcome! It's necessary both for you and us to prepare some theoretical basis and get required equipment to organize experiments correctly.
  2. Second way to work in our group is for persons who interest in musical acoustics, music and sound recording. In such a way examples of research subjects are like the following: sampling of sounds of various natures, producing a sample-library; musical samples and creating of new musical virtual instruments; investigations of bird singing and sounds of nature. The list of topics can be extended. Any suggestions from pupils and teachers, of course, are welcome! Please, contact us by e-mail!

Wish you a good time on International Research School - 2009!
